America is blessed with creative entrepreneurs. For example, check out the http://www.johnny-light.com. It is a special toilet lid. When the lid is lifted, a green light comes on to warn the woman that the lid is up. In the case of a man, the device means “green light go.”

Unfortunately, the device contains a mercury switch. Bill Bradford, the inventor, was not aware of concerns with mercury when he designed it. Now he is actively seeking a substitute. He thought compliance with EPA rules was adequate. Wrong! Fortunately, the switch is encapsulated and relatively small.

From IKE’s perspective, Indiana and its communities need to be notified by manufacturers when these products are sold in the state to be able to address our mercury problems. While this provision was removed from HB-1901, IKE hopes it will be reinstated.

This article was published in March 2001.  The company's public relations firm has contacted IKE on April 27, 2004 claiming that the company redesigned the device in April 2002 so it does not a mercury switch.
