New Mercury Sources in Indiana

Enviropower has proposed two large power plants — in Pike and Sullivan counties — in Southern Indiana. These facilities will burn the residue from coal processing called “gob.” Gob is the coal fines generated by washing coal. It usually is made near the coal mine.

According to Enviropower’s permit applications, each plant will have potential emissions (before controls) of 3,400 pounds of mercury. They are likely to be among the largest sources of mercury in a region already wrestling with mercury from other coal-fired power plants.

IKE is helping with John Blair and others ensure that IDEM gives full consideration to air quality impacts and imposes the Best Available Control Technology. These steps are required when potential emissions exceed 200 pounds—far less than the 10,000 pound threshold in the national rules.
