Indiana "Windows of Opportunity" Project

Why Windows?

According to US Housing and Urban Development research, old windows are:

  • More likely to contain lead;
  • Contain higher levels of lead;
  • More likely to have deteriorated paint especially in the area between the main window and the storm/screen window; and
  • A primary source of lead dust that poisons children.

If lead-based paint windows are present, it is extremely difficult to make a home lead-safe. With new windows, a lead-safe home is more realistic since good housekeeping and maintenance usually can effectively address other areas with lead-based paint.

In addition, window replacement reduces energy costs, improves the value of a home, and may reduce mold-forming moisture that can trigger asthma.
