#1 A New View of Homes - Q & A with Dennis Livingston  – Tues. 10:30 to 11:30 am

Dennis Livingston is an advocate for healthy homes in Baltimore for Community Solutions.  He is a charismatic speaker with a new holistic way of looking at a home that can lead to sustainable solutions.  After giving his plenary session speech, Mr. Livingston will be available to respond to questions and ideas in a smaller forum.

#2 A Commitment to Solutions - Q & A with Parents - Tues. 1:30 to 2:30 pm

Leadership comes from all corners.  In this session, you will have an opportunity to talk with parents and grandparents of lead poisoned child.  This small group forum will give you the chance to ask you questions and get answers.   

 

Moderator:    Karla Johnson - Team Leader with the Marion County Health Department

  • Sheila Evans - Grandparent of a Lead Poisoned Child

#3 How to Required Cleanup with Existing RulesTues. 2:40 to 3:40 pm

Thanks to the Alliance for Healthy Homes, IKE's Tom Neltner has worked with other lawyers across the country to identify methods to use the existing laws and regulations to require clean-up.  He will focus on the following tools:

  • General Authority of Chief Health Officer

  • Local Housing Codes

  • Federal Fair Housing Act and its state counterpart

  • Federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and its state counterpart

  • Federal Toxic Substances Control Act

  • Federal Residential Lead-Based Paint Hazard Reduction Act

  • Related Citizen Suit Options

Many of these options are novel approaches.  So join in the discussion of their merits.

#4 HITS and Special CollaborationsTues. 3:50 to 4:50

Finding children that need help is tough.  This session will explore several methods to reach these children.  It will focus on the High Intensity Targeted Screening model used by Chicago and the community-university collaboration in South Bend, Indiana.

#5  CDC's New Approach - Q & A with Dr. Mary Jean Brown Wed. 9:15 to 10:30

Dr. Mary Jean Brown joined the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention after several years at Harvard University.  As a public health nurse, she has real life experiences that - coupled with a researchers analytical skills - have brought new energy and direction to CDC's efforts to eliminate lead poisoning by 2010.  After giving her plenary session speech, Dr. Brown will be on hand to respond to questions.     

 

Moderator:     Dr. Deborah McMahan - Chief Health Officer and Director of the Fort Wayne - Allen County Health Department

  • Dr. Mary Jean Brown - Chief of the Lead Poisoning Prevention Branch at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia and an Adjunct Professor of Society, Human Development and Health at the Harvard School of Public Health in Cambridge, Massachusetts

#6  Advocacy for Healthy Homes - Q & A with Don Ryan Wed. 10:45 to 11:45 am

Don Ryan has been the leading advocate for lead poisoning prevention for more than 15 years.  Now, he has expanded his focus to deal more holistically with the problem of unhealthy homes.  As the executive director of the Alliance for Healthy Homes, formerly known as the Alliance to End Childhood Lead Poisoning, Don has the vision and the voice to make a difference.

 

Before his lunchtime plenary session speech, Mr. Ryan will respond to questions and concerns at this session.
