| 2003 Indiana Lead-Safe and Healthy Homes Conference October 15 & 16, 2003
Attention Licensed Lead Professionals! If your Indiana Risk Assessor or Lead Abatement Supervisor license expires before Oct. 15, 2004, you can take your one-day refresher training by participating in the conference. There is an additional cost of $95 per person. That is much less than the typical registration fee and you will only need stay an additional two hours on Thursday, October 16. Risk assessors will still need to take the one-day Lead Inspector Refresher training to apply for a license. The Environmental Management Institute (EMI) is offering that course on Friday, Oct. 17. Please note that EMI has not yet received final approval from Illinois and Indiana to offer this course at the conference. If the approval is not granted, you will give a full refund of the refresher registration fee. This is a bit complicated. We apologize in advance. IDEM had to make it complicated to give you more flexibility while still ensuring that licensees know what they are doing. Indiana's 326 IAC 23-2-5 set three timelines to get your license renewed. If you do not meet any one of these timelines, you will need to retake the initial training and the third-party examination. 1. Less than 48 months between trainings: You must not let more than 48 months pass between your trainings for a specific discipline. If you are a risk assessor taking the refresher at the conference, you must have taken either an initial or refresher training after October 16, 1999. This limit is usually not a problem but you need to keep it in mind. 2. Less that 12 months between training and applying for license. You must apply for a license within 12 months of taking the refresher training. Because of House Enrolled Act 1171, many lead professional licenses in Indiana expire in June 2005. Therefore, if your license expires after October 15, 2004, you will not be able to claim credit if you take the refresher at this year's conference. Wait until next year. 3. Licensed expired less than 6 months. You should not let your license expire. But if you do, you must not let it lapse for more than six months. Again, if you do not meet any of these timelines, you will need to retake the initial training and the third-party examination (except for lead workers who do not need to take a third-party examination at any time). If you took the refresher training at the 2001 conference, please understand that we have set it up differently this time. There will be no evening sessions and you will have much more flexibility in choosing which sessions to attend. There are only two sessions that you must attend. On Wednesday, October 15 from 2:40 to 4:50, you must attend the Indiana Rules: Hoosier Variations course offered by EMI. On Thursday, October 16 from 3:15 to 5:00, you must attend a review and exam session. Special Situation for Risk Assessors: If you are a risk assessor, you cannot get both the risk assessor and inspector refresher trainings during the conference. There is just not enough time. Therefore, EMI has scheduled a Lead Inspector Refresher course for Friday, October 17 - the day after the conference. You need to register for that course directly with EMI at 800-488-8842. We strongly encourage you to take both courses right after each other. Both courses will reinforce what you need to know and make it easier to take EMI's examination at the end of the course. In addition, as you can see from the timeline restrictions above, it will greatly simplify the timing for renewals for you in the future. If you are a licensed risk assessor AND supervisor, thank for you commitment to protecting children from lead poisoning. Unfortunately, you cannot double-count the training. You must choose to count the training under one or the other discipline but not both. If you are confused, send an email to Tom Neltner at mccabe@ikecoalition.org or call him at 317-442-3973 to work through the details. |
