#3 Connection Between Healthy Homes and Success in SchoolWed. 2:40 to 3:40 pm

Lead poisoning generally happens in children before they get to kindergarten - usually when they are just a toddler.  But the impacts of the poisoning are usually not made clear until the child goes to school when the child struggles to learn, to pay attention and to handle anger.  Schools, especially urban schools, are on the front line with parents in managing this problem.  Unfortunately, schools have been slow to understand the challenge.  Some avoid the issue out of fear that the focus will end up on lead-based paint in their buildings.  Others simply do not understand the issue.

There are no easy answers especially with Indiana's poor lead poisoning screening rates.  But if you care about the success of schools and of at-risk children, plan to attend this session.

Moderator:    Ron Fischer, Geologist, Office of Land Quality, Indiana Department of Environmental Management

Speakers:

  • Marcia Pierce, Indianapolis Office of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development & School Board Member for Lawrence Township School Corporation.

  • Jill Fischer, Teacher and Parent of Lead Poisoned Child

#4 Grant Writing Resources:  Networks and MoneyWed. 3:50 to 4:50

We would love to provide you with a single source that would explain the simple steps to getting the grant money you need to provide your community with healthy homes.  Unfortunately, we could not find that person - and we are not sure that person exists.

Finding funding is an ongoing challenge for all programs.  This session will provide insight into methods to identify funders and discern what they really want.  The focus will be on making a candid assessment of the merits of the investment and the likelihood of success.  Mark Young of the Indiana Housing and Finance Authority will moderate the session and explain the grant opportunities available at IHFA.

Moderator:   Mark Young, Indiana Housing Finance Authority

Speakers:

  • Dr. Frances Huehls, Joseph and Matthew Payton Philanthropic Studies Library, IUPUI University Library

  • David Hillman, Grant Program Manager, Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust

  • Teresa Bath, Grant Manager, Area V Council on Aging and Community Services
