Why Should Medical Professionals Attend the 2002 Lead-Safe Indiana Conference on November 6 & 7, 2002?

As a doctor, nurse or other medical professional, you are on the front line of lead poisoning prevention.  You work with the children and have the opportunity to make a major difference in their lives.  Whether it is a blood lead test consistent with state guidelines; making a parent aware of the problem and how to fix it; or treating a severely lead poisoned child.  With an estimated 15,000 lead poisoned children in Indiana alone, you need to know that the work you do is critical.

We need you - your perspective, your opinion, your experience - at the 2002 Lead-Safe Indiana Conference on November 6 & 7, 2002 in Indy.  Your presence keeps us focused on the goal of protecting children's future.

We also think you would benefit from the conference.  We would like to make the following suggestions as you consider the agenda:

  • Get the facts behind the lead poisoning statistics in Indiana in a forum where you can ask questions of the people who handle the data.  The session is on Wednesday from 10:30 to 11:45.

  • Learn what a comprehensive, primary prevention-based, lead poisoning program for Indiana could look like from Ruth Ann Norton of the Coalition to End Childhood Lead Poisoning.  You can attend a breakout session afterwards to ask more detailed questions and discussion the answers.  Her presentation is on Wednesday from 12:00 to 1:15 and the breakout discussion is immediately afterwards from 1:30 to 2:30.

  • Find out the latest word on mold in Indiana and voice your opinions on the policy options Indiana should consider on Wednesday from 2:40 to 3:40.

  • Discover what Medicaid is required to do - and plans to do - when it comes to meeting the federal testing, environmental investigation, and case management mandates on Wednesday from 3:50 to 4:50.

  • Share your lead poisoning ideas and approaches with other leading doctors in Indiana on Thursday from 9:00 to 10:30.

  • Hear from parents of lead poisoned children about the very real challenges they encounter as the help their child and their community on Thursday from 10:45 to 12:00 and hear from Susan Thornfeld of the Maine Lead Action Project at the Thursday lunch.

  • Nominate your favorite lead poisoning prevention advocate in your organization who has done outstanding work in dealing with lead-based paint for a Lead-Safe Indiana Award.  Hopefully your nominee will receive an award on Thursday afternoon.
