| Unique, Primary Prevention Strategies Suites 6 & 7 In the morning session, we heard from the three federal agencies how well Indiana is doing in preventing lead poisoning. While it is critical to get that assessment, it is equally important to learn about successful programs in other states can serve as models for Indiana communities. This session will provide those models in the Midwest including potential local ordinances as well as the latest research on the sources of lead poisoning that will influence program success. Moderator: Dave McCormick - Marion County Health Department. Mr. McCormick is the manager of Indiana’s largest lead poisoning prevention program. The program is a model for other communities from annual birthday lead screening reminders to its efforts to educate paint retailers. Speakers: Bonnie Dyck – Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Ms. Dyck is the grant manager for all CDC lead poisoning prevention grants in Region 5. She conducts regular site visits and has an excellent understanding of models in other Midwest states. She will address public health related models she has seen and what makes them excel. Maryann Suero, Ph.D – Environmental Protection Agency - Region V. Dr. Suero is EPA’s regional children’s health coordinator. She provides technical support to lead poisoning and other children’s health programs throughout Region V. She will address programs to reduce exposure to lead hazards that she has seen and what makes them excel. Bill Menrath – University of Cincinnati. Mr. Menrath is the chair of the City of Cincinnati’s lead poisoning prevention coalition. He is also a researcher for the university evaluating the sources of lead dust in urban areas. He will focus on the results of his research as well as the efforts of the coalition and the city ordinance that it has developed. |
