Paint Association Takes Proactive Stance

When you go to the paint store, you expect to get advice that will not poison you or your child. Giving bad advice is bad business and legally risky.

At the request of EPA, the Alliance to End Childhood Lead Poisoning and IKE, the National Paint and Coatings Association has taken a stance on the issue—acknowledging the critical role that its members must take to prevent lead poisoning. In August, the NPCA officially advised its members to:

  • Seriously consider changing product labels to address lead hazards during surface preparation.
  • Distribute EPA brochures and materials about lead-based paint hazards.

The NPCA also will develop a “rack” of materials that should be distributed and is evaluating the feasibility of providing training for clerks.

See IKE's broader effort on lead poisoning prevention for more details.
