Jewelry marked as "Lead Free" turns
out not to be; retailer conducts national recall
-
In November 2007, IKE and the Marion
County Health Department discovered that a local retailer was selling
jewelry sets that were marked as "Lead Free."
-
Testing by the Health Department showed
that several of the pieces contained substantial amounts of lead--way more
than the 600 parts per million standard of the Consumer Product Safety
Commission.
-
In an article in the New York Times on
November 17, K Mart stated that it would conduct a national recall of the
jewelry
-
There is no official designation of
products as "Lead Free"; consumers should be wary of such claims
-
Lead in jewelry, even that not
specifically marketed for children, can still be accessible to youngsters
who can suck on or swallow small parts
