Indiana Lead-Safe & Healthy Homes Newsletter December 2003 Edition Improving Kids’ Environment (IKE) and the Indiana Lead-Safe Task Force publish this newsletter every two or three months at no charge for anyone interested in issues and events involving lead poisoning prevention and healthy homes in Indiana. Distribution is by email or fax – preferably by e-mail. We try to keep the newsletter to five pages. Contact the editor, Tom Neltner, at mccabe@ikecoalition.org or 317-442-3973 if you want to contribute articles, edit the draft newsletter, have an article to contribute, or want to get on or off the distribution list. All editions are available on IKE’s web page at http://www.ikecoalition.org/publications.htm. ISDH’s Lead Elimination Plan Action Committee (EPAC) is responsible for developing a plan to eliminate lead poisoning in Indiana by 2010. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention expects a draft plan in February and a final version in June. The committee has met twice already. John Hall, Director for the Indiana HUD Office is chairing the meeting. With the monthly committee meetings and six active subcommittees, ISDH has decided to cancel its regularly scheduled Advisory Group meeting on Thursday December 11. The Lead-Safe Indiana Task Force has moved its meeting to Tuesday, December 9 to coordinate with EPAC’s Housing and Environmental Subcommittee meetings. These meetings are open to all. So far, they have been very interesting. You can also contact Wendy Clingaman at Wclingam@isdh.state.in.us or (317) 233-1250 to get on the email lists. Therefore, I am providing you with a quick summary of the key dates to remember as you plan your schedule for the holidays and beyond.
o EPAC Environmental Subcommittee from 10:00 to 11:30 o Lead-Safe Indiana Task Force from 11:30 to 12:30 – lunch provided (rescheduled from Dec. 11). o EPAC Housing Subcommittee from 12:30 to 2:00
In addition, the EPA-approved and HUD-approved Lead-Safe Work Practices trainings are already underway. These trainings are offered for free to all courtesy of the settlement between the National Paint and Coatings Association and 46 Attorneys General. The sessions in and around Indiana are as follows:
Go to www.leadsafetraining.org for an updated list of the training and to register. If you can assure the contractor (Masimax) that you can have 20 people attend the session, they may be able to set up a training in your community. You can contact them at 866-232-5419 or leadtraininginfo@masimax.com for details. IDEM Restructures Lead and Asbestos Section: IDEM has decided to split its lead and asbestos program into two parts. The inspectors will move into an inspection section supervised by Janusz Johnson. Larry Fedor will be supervising the licensing, training course provider, bilingual reception, and program staff. The loss of a distinct section at IDEM committed to the unique tasks surrounding lead and asbestos presents serious concerns. IEHA Seeking Asthma Program Coordinator for InJAC: ISDH has contracted with the Indiana Environmental Health Association to support ISDH’s and IDEM’s work on the Indiana Joint Asthma Council. Now that is coordination in action! The coordinator must have a degree in health or environmental science. The contract will last one year. The coordinator will work at IDEM’s and ISDH’s offices and be paid $18.72 per hour. Click here for announcement and position description. If you are interested mail your resume to Indiana Environmental Health Association, P.O. Box 457, Indianapolis, IN 46206-0457 before December 15, 2003. Thanks for improving kids' environment! Please let us know if you do not want to receive this newsletter. You may get enough emails and faxes already. We do not want to add to the burden if you are not interested in receiving the materials. IKE publishes two additional newsletters on a quarterly basis. Contact Tom Neltner at mccabe@ikecoalition.org if you want to subscribe to either of those newsletters.
