| Lead Hazard Reduction Training
IKE has partnered with the Environmental Management Institute to develop training courses to help organizations that want to comply with the HUD Lead-Based Paint Rule. This rule goes into effect on September 15, 2000. The Environmental Management Institute of Indianapolis, Indiana, a nonprofit environmental training organization affiliated with the Indiana University, is pleased to offer two courses for organizations that need to comply with the new U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development regulations regarding lead-based paint. EMI is the only Indiana-based firm that offers a full line-up of accredited asbestos and lead training courses. It is accredited in Indiana and Illinois. Contact Tom Neltner of IKE at mccabe@ikecoalition.org or 317/442-3973 or Brenda of EMI at 800-488-8842 or 317-248-4846 between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm Eastern Standard Time. Class sizes are limited but EMI must have 8 registrants to offer the class. Contract training outside of Indianapolis is also available. The new course offerings are: 4-Hour Lead Hazard Reduction for Maintenance Workers and Painters. This course is designed for maintenance works and painters who intend to perform the following activities pursuant to the HUD rule:
This course is not adequate to allow a person to perform abatement of lead-based paint. On July 6, 2000 HUD approved this course pursuant to 24 CFR 35.1330(a)(4)(v). This approval allows course participants to perform those activities without the need for a licensed lead-based paint abatement supervisor. Based on the July/August newsletter from the Alliance to End Childhood Lead Poisoning, this course is the only HUD-approved, 4-hour course. FAQ for 4-hour course.
8-Hour, Train-the-Trainer for HUD-Approved 4-Hour Maintenance Worker Course. This course is designed to train individuals to effectively teach EMI’s 4-hour Lead Hazard Reduction for Maintenance Works and Painters course described above. Only individuals with an education certificate or with experience in providing adult education courses will be eligible to take the course. EMI intends to offer a 12-hour course for those who do not meet these requirements. Individuals successfully completing the course will be authorized by EMI to teach the 4-hour course as long as they maintain current registration with EMI. Registration is available for $25 per quarter. EMI will provide all registrants with regular updates of course materials and current issues related to the HUD regulation. Registrants will be expected to provide EMI with information on course offerings and on modifications to the course book. FAQ for 8-hour train-the-trainer course.
6-Hour, Sampling Technician Course. EPA has developed a 6-hour sampling technician class for those individuals who will conduct clearance examinations after interim controls under the supervision of a licensed lead inspector or risk assessor. The inspector or risk assessor must sign the clearance examination report until a state adopts and implements a licensing program for sampling technicians. For more information on the course, see HUD's website for course materials developed by EPA. Please note that some states may not allow recognize a sampling technician and will require a licensed risk assessor or inspector to personally conduct the clearance examination. Check with your state. |
