Back to Main Report Indianapolis Citizen’s Healthy Homes Initiative Kennedy-King Park Neighborhood Needs Assessment Finding #6Two-thirds of Apartment Buildings Need Help 15% of the 125 multi-unit buildings (including duplexes) in the neighborhood are boarded and apparently vacant. 33% of the buildings have serious exterior problems (including being partially boarded or vacant) that are likely to lead to environmental hazards in the home. Another 35% have exterior hazards that need to be addressed to protect the residents. Several apartments are being converted to condominiums. Duplexes are being renovated into single-family homes. This conversion further aggravates the city’s already desperate need for safe, healthy and affordable housing. For the neighborhood to succeed it needs rental housing to attract new residents, but the units need to be safe, healthy and affordable. |
